African Violets

You want to have your own jungle inside your sunroom? Are you thinking about buying some plants to liven up your home a little? What should you buy? Maybe you don't have a green thumb but would like to buy one or two houseplants and see how it goes.

Ok, first know which plants are easy to care for then, if you don't kill these, buy more, and choose more challenging plants.

How about a beautiful African Violet? They're one of the most wonderful plants to care for and enjoy. Their blooms come in many different colors and mixture of colors so you can collect a range of colorful African Violets.

African Violets need lots of sun. Be careful to water them from the bottom away from the leaves so they don't rot. These plants are easy to propagate by taking a few stem cuttings and letting them root in water. I've had great success doing this. You can also use a rooting hormone powder. Once the stems roots become hardy and you see little off-shoots (baby stems) growing, you can transplant the new plant into soil or leave it there in your water.

Braided Money Tree -This is a beautiful plant which I intend on buying for myself. It's got lovely winding trunks. They don't take alot of water and do well in medium sunlight.

Aloe Vera - Almost everyone has owned an Aloe Vera plant at one time. Maybe your mom used to have one. They're great to have around for soothing burns. They can tolerate less watering and need direct sunlight.

Philodendron- Great plant to have! I love these because they are so easy, grow fast and you can let them go and they'll climb or plant them in a large pot and they bush out. They propagate easily in water. I like to just put them in a beautiful vase or jar and let them live in the water. They root really well and are pretty hardy plants. I have a Philodendron plant that I took a cutting from my mother's plant that has been in her family since her great Grandmother! My favorite plants are the ones that I've gotten from family. In fact, one of my most cherished plants is, I believe a Dumb Cane which my now decease mother gave me when it was just a "sprig". It's growing so big now and I think of her everytime I water it. The Dumb Cane (Dieflenbachia) also propagates easily from a cutting. I think you have to use rooting hormone for this, which I've never tried. I think you can also root a cutting in water. Am I wrong about this?

Anyway, there are many more plants that you can get that are easy. Here are some helpful links:

Hi my friend. I like growing plants too, houseplants from cuttings and garden plants mainly from seed. I have just air-layered a shefflera plant as it was getting very spindley, so now I have two of them :-)

Take care

Richard
