The Winter Blahs

If you're like much of America this winter, you've been really walloped with rain, snow and ice lately. It's a mess out there and the kids have probably been out of school a few days because of the inclimate weather. Wasn't it fun those first couple of days? Let's go build a snowman! You love watching the little ones playing out in the snow, sticking their tongues out to catch the falling snowflakes. Precious memories. Watching them reminds me of those fun winter days when I made snow angels and played for hours out in the cold. When it was time to come in, we got hot chocolate while our clothes were in the dryer getting ready for another round of snowball fights. Ahhhh, those first days of snow and kids going out then coming in.

So now, you may be getting a little tired of the whole thing. The kids are getting bored with the snow and are wanting to stay in. What do you do? There's all that hot cocoa and maybe we can make some Rice Crispy Treats....cool. Yeah, so you make the snacks, drink hot chocolate and watch some movies. This is great. Day 2..... Day 3..... ok, ..."What do you mean you're bored?" "Go build another snowman or better yet, - Hey!!!! I know, why don't you build a snowlady to go with your snow man?" Frowns. No? Ok, "What about snow babies?" . Ok. No snowbabies.

After reminding them, they have their coloring books and crayons, you dig out more movies they forgot about. " No.....that's for babies. That's a baby movie. " So, after awhile you let them stew in their winter unhappiness. You try to stay busy and do some dishes. You peek in on them and they're content with some action figures and Barbies. Good. That's really nice.

Peace.

Blessed Peace.

Then the fighting begins. "He pulled my hair!"

"Mom, she stoled G.I. Joes shoes....and his gun. Give it back, stupid-head!". And that's when you have an idea. You scan the room. You walk into another room. Come back. Stand in the kitchen, still holding the damp dish towel.

Without a word you start clearing the dining room table and drag it into the living room. The kids are looking at you strangely. You remain silent. Go into the other room and drag out another smaller table and set it next to the dining room table. You leave the room again, returning with several large blankets. The kids mouths are now opened. You smile as you shake out the blankets and lay them over top the tables, making sure you let the blankets hang down low over the sides of the tables.

One tent.

Two tents.

One for him and one for her.

Walah! You leave the room one more time and come back with two pillows and two flashlights. When the children realized what you just did, they scream happily. You hear,

"Mom, you're the best!." "Wow! I get my own tent! No boys allowed!" and that's that.

The tent idea is the BEST. I loved it when I was a kid and my kids really enjoyed it, too. It was well worth having to put everything back in its place. :)
